Foreign Trade Zone
What is a foreign trade zone?
The United States government created the foreign trade zone program to boost international trade and make US-based companies more competitive on the global market. Foreign Trade Zones are sites that are granted FTZ (Foreign Trade Zone) status by the FTZ Board and that status allows the site to be seen as outside of the US Customs territory in regards to customs duty payments.
When goods, merchandise, or cargo are imported to a foreign trade zone, they are not subject to customs tariffs or ad valorem taxes until the cargo leaves the zone. Additionally, cargo exported outside of the US from a foreign trade zone are exempt from customs duties. This can be very beneficial to a variety of operations such as:
- Manufacturing
- Processing
- Repairing
- Testing
- Distributing
- Storing
